HTV Can Work Too, but Choose It Carefully
Heat transfer vinyl is another option for waterproof workwear, particularly when the design is relatively simple.
Think:

- Names
- Numbers
- Small lettering
- Simple symbols
- Single-colour branding
The advantage is that HTV gives you plenty of control over the finished design. It can also be a practical option when you’re only producing a handful of jackets.
But again, don’t reach for ordinary HTV automatically.
Nylon and coated fabrics may require a vinyl specifically designed for those surfaces. The adhesive needs to bond to the garment without requiring a temperature that could damage the fabric.
This is where having a proper heat press becomes particularly useful. You can control temperature, pressure and pressing time much more consistently than you can with a domestic iron.
The Biggest Mistake: Using Your Normal T-Shirt Settings
This is probably the easiest mistake to make.
You’ve got a transfer that normally works at a particular temperature and pressing time, so you put the waterproof jacket on the press and use the same settings.
It looks fine when you peel the carrier.
Then, a few washes later, the edge starts lifting.
Or the jacket develops a glossy patch where the press was applied.
Or the waterproof coating has been affected.
There are plenty of real-world reports from printers who have encountered adhesion problems with rainwear and technical jackets, which is why testing is so important.
The manufacturer’s recommended settings for the transfer are only part of the equation.
You also need to consider the garment manufacturer’s heat limitations.
If the jacket label says it should not be exposed to a particular temperature, don’t ignore that just because your transfer supplier recommends a higher one.
Always Test the Jacket Before Doing the Real Job
This sounds obvious, but it’s surprisingly easy to skip when someone has just ordered a batch of jackets and wants them done quickly.
Don’t make the first jacket the customer’s jacket.
If possible, get a spare piece of the same material. If that’s not available, test on a discreet area of the actual garment.
Start with the transfer manufacturer’s recommended application method, while staying within the garment’s heat tolerance. Check the result after cooling rather than deciding it looks good while it is still warm.
Then test the bond.
Try flexing the fabric. Check the edges. Look for lifting or bubbling. If appropriate for the garment, wash-test a sample before committing to a larger order.
A little testing can save an awful lot of awkward conversations later.
What About Waterproof and Breathable Jackets?
This is where things get particularly interesting.
A basic waterproof jacket and a technical outdoor shell are not necessarily constructed in the same way.
Some premium jackets use waterproof breathable membranes designed to keep rain out while allowing moisture vapour to escape. Others use laminated layers or specialist coatings.
